Education

Overview

Since education and society are intertwined, Burhán Institute regards its mission as a milieu for social change through education. In the tumultuous situation in the Middle East, we believe, education, as a geopolitical force, can play a constructive role to advance peace, modernization, and equality in the region.

The purpose of Burhán education is to advocate, facilitate, and develop a comprehensive, sustainable, and strategically-oriented framework (a set of concepts, values, and practices) for education and universal access to knowledge. This framework is intended to support an emerging educational paradigm that is most likely to be:

Accessible • Integrative • Free or affordable

Research-based • Technologically-driven • Prejudice-free

Socially-conscious • Global in orientation

Rapidly-evolving along the frontiers of knowledge

Topics will include but not limited to: Critical thinking in education, ethical issues in education, institutional innovation, educational reform, the impact of technology on education, future of higher learning, religion and education, globalization and education, environmental education, challenges of social sciences and humanities, the right to education, education for peace and global understanding, education and social change, and features of modern education.

Burhán Institute strives to uphold and commit to the following visions and values:

The organization is nonpolitical and nonsectarian.  It recognizes the diversity and dignity of the human race and avoids political and sectarian divisions and disputes.

Burhán Institute adheres to the universal ethics of unity, justice, equality, and freedom for all.

Burhán Institute intends to build a solid conceptual foundation based on the progressive interplay of continuity and novelty, unity and diversity.

Burhán Institute advocates universal and open access to results of scientific research, knowledge, and learning.

Burhán Institute considers education as a fundamental human right.  The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory.”

Burhán Institute defends the right to education through practical and systematic organizational approach.

Burhán Institute considers education to be a vital key to individual and collective transformation.

Education should foster a dialogue between science, society, and culture.

Universal ethical values are at the core of any educational activity.  Education is primarily an ethical enterprise.

Our objectives for the first phase of development are:

To promote, advocate and defend the right to education and educational opportunities for all populations as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

To establish communications and short- & long- term collaborations with other like-minded organizations in supporting and advancing education at all levels.

To create forums among like-minded educators for collaboration and exchange of ideas.

To support global initiatives for the removal of oppressive measures against education of women and girls.

To promote universal access to education through distance/online delivery and collaborate with universities and institutions that are providing MOOCs in diverse fields of knowledge and disciplines.

To prepare an annual report on the state of education and human rights.

To facilitate discourse, through texts and webinars, on educational and social change.
